Donald Benamna is originally from Central African Republic, and is the first Stumptown Athletic player called to represent his country’s national team while on our roster. In October, Benamna joined the rest of his nation’s top players for a friendly match against Niger. Before joining Stumptown Athletic, Benamna played for the NPSL Little Rock Rangers, which won the 2018 conference tournament and made it to the 2019 playoffs.

When did you start playing soccer?

I started playing when I was around five years old, out with my father, brothers and relatives. We used to play soccer everywhere when I was back home in Central African Republic – we played in the street, on concrete. Any kind of space we thought could be used for soccer, we would use.

My father also played soccer back in my country. Most of the males in my families – my cousins, uncles – play or played soccer, and that’s where I got my start and developed my skills.

My father moved to the United States to work for the embassy when I was seven, and the rest of us followed when I was 12, moving to Silver Spring, Maryland. I finished middle school here, then high school, and I knew I wanted to be a professional soccer player.

When did your soccer career take off?

I really grew as a player when I was in high school, at Montgomery Blair High Maryland. I was named an all-Region, all-State and all-MET player, and I also twice won the National Super Y league golden boot. I also played club ball with ASA Milan BlackHawks until I went to college; while I was on the team, we moved from division 5 to division 1, winning many awards along the way.

All those experiences helped ma land a full scholarship to San Diego State University. I played there for a year as well as for Milan Rosseneri. While I was in California, I played for the combine team and played in the Dallas Cup and the Surf Cup, and was named Surf Cup MVP.

From California, I transferred to San Jacinto College in Texas and earned All-American status. I finished out my college career at the University of Central Arkansas. I’m proud to say I was recognized there for Outstanding Athletic Performance – Men’s All-Conference.

After graduating with a degree in health education, I played two summers for the NPSL Little Rock Rangers. While I was there, the team won the 2018 conference tournament and made it to the regional finals; in 2019, we lost in the first round of playoffs.

Who do you admire?

Personally, my father has always been my number one, but there have been a couple of people along the way who also inspired me.

Luis Nani is my favorite professional player because of his technical abilities – he’s very skilled. He’s also a team player and a true creator on the field, and he serves his teammates on the field. He’s really been my idol since I started watching him back in 2008.

What should fans know about you?

Professionally, I’d like to make it to the World Cup, as well as the Champions league and other big FIFA tournaments one day.

Off the pitch, I want to give back. I believe giving back to my community and people who are in need of help is one way to let them know that we are all human beings and the same. Everyone is important and there is nothing better than taking care of others.

What do you do when you’re off the field?

I always try to stay active in my spare time. If it’s not soccer, I’m probably at the gym. Or sometimes I also rest the body, and I like staying inside. I think people would be surprised to know that I’m a good cook and goofy teammate.
